You can. Portable units work reasonably well for a single room. The limitation is that they only treat the air in one space, and your HVAC system is constantly circulating air throughout your entire home. A whole-home solution treats every cubic foot of air your system moves, which is a fundamentally different approach. For mild concerns in one room, a portable unit might be enough. For broader issues affecting the whole house, usually a whole-home solution makes more sense.
It can, yes. Clogged or inadequate filtration forces your air handler to work harder to pull air through the system. That extra load increases energy consumption. Better filtration that's properly maintained typically improves airflow and can reduce system strain. Over time, that shows up as lower utility costs.
More often than the packaging suggests, typically. In NWA, our pollen seasons are long and aggressive. During peak spring and fall allergy seasons, a filter that would last three months in a low-pollen environment might need replacing in four to six weeks. We recommend checking your filter monthly and replacing it whenever it looks gray or dirty, regardless of how long it's been in.
It depends on what you're trying to address. UV-C germicidal lights are effective at destroying biological contaminants like mold and bacteria on contact. They work well when installed on the coil of your air handler, where mold growth is most common. They're not a substitute for filtration, but as part of a broader IAQ strategy they make a real difference.
Both cause problems, just different ones. High humidity, which is our bigger challenge through summer, encourages mold and dust mite growth. Low humidity in winter dries out respiratory passages and makes people more susceptible to airborne viruses. The goal is maintaining that 40 to 60 percent relative humidity range year-round, and a whole-home humidification system does that automatically.
In the wrong conditions, yes. If mold develops on your evaporator coil or inside your air handler, your system can distribute spores to every room in the house. This is one of the reasons UV germicidal lights installed at the coil are so effective. It's also why regular HVAC maintenance matters.
